About Us

Bringing Physical Activity, Recreation and Community Sport leaders together to ensure participation for people of all abilities

Since 1989, Active Abilities Canada has served to encourage people with disabilities to make physical activity a regular part of their lives and help build the capacity of communities and organizations to make this possible.

Over the years, there has been an increase in the number of people who identify with a disability. And this number is still thought to be a low estimate. People with disabilities have significantly fewer opportunities than other people living in Canada to enjoy the benefits of active recreation due to physical, social, and psychological barriers, which translates into poorer physical, mental and social health outcomes. Even low levels of physical activity have significant positive health effects.

Active Abilities Canada is uniquely positioned to support organizations and communities that influence physical activity opportunities for their constituents, whether they be in physical activity, recreation or the community sports sectors, disability advocacy organizations, the education sector, the health sector, and/or in workplaces. It is our wish that disability is not an after-thought but rather integrated into the conception and implementation of campaigns, programs, policies, facility and outdoor design, and other initiatives.

Active Abilities Canada believes that the individual must be considered first when developing any program or service, and that the rights and dignity of the individual must always be respected.
